The Hulda Festival
The Hulda Festival is an innovative platform which aims at contributing to raising public interest for building bridges between sciences, arts and daily life. The project takes its name from M/S Hulda, a two-mastBaltic schooner built in 1905 at the Sjötorp shipyard in Sweden. The mission of the Hulda Festival is inspired by the work of İlhan Koman and brings together artists from diverse backgrounds and disciplines to create a platform of inspiration, interaction and cooperation with a mission of more democratic access to cultural content and freedom of expression. Exploration and human interaction constitute the core of the Hulda’s mission: resident artists from different countries, cultures and disciplines are implementing workshops in their creative domain and as inspired by Hulda’s journey, the region they visit and their experience, and sharing their inspirations with local citizens.
The Hulda project is the second of a series of events, which were inspired by İlhan Koman’s quest, and combine the artist’s passion for unrestricted thought, research and The Mediterranean. The theme of the second Hulda Festival builds around “interaction” and “creativity.” In context of the project, M/S Hulda is destined to eight regions in the Mediterranean, mainly France, Greece, Mallorca-Menorca, Malta, Sardinia, Sicily, Spain and Turkey. After leaving Turkey, M/S Hulda’s first destination is Amfilochia in Greece where various activities will be implemented from the 16th to the 20th of August. After Amfilochia M/S Hulda will set sail for her second destination Valletta. The historical ship will travel up to the Spanish coast through summer 2013.
The Hulda Festival in Amfilochia
In the framework of Hulda Festival, visual artist Rania Emmanouilidou and designers Apostolos Rizos and Bilal Yilmaz, organize workshops for the public, focusing around the observation of the natural and urban environment, the collection of stimuli and materials, sounds, and images, that will be used in order to create art works. The workshops prompt the participants to look around and redefine the identity of their environment, using their own experiences in order to highlight the qualities of their hometown. Also, during Hulda's visit in Amfilochia, the public has the possibility to visit the onboard exhibition presenting works by Ilhan Koman in addition to works by Rania Emmanouilidou and Apostolos Rizos.
